Two Ukrainians Elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences
According to an official press release, Ukrainians Maryna Viazovska and Svitlana Krakovska have been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. They are among 120 new members recognized for their outstanding and ongoing achievements in original research.
Maryna Viazovska is a professor and head of the Department of Number Theory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. She is a recipient of the prestigious Fields Medal — often referred to as the «Nobel Prize of Mathematics» — which is awarded every four years to mathematicians under 40. Maryna is internationally renowned for solving the centuries-old problem of sphere packing in eight dimensions.

Svitlana Krakovska leads the Laboratory of Applied Climatology at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute. She is a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a Soros Foundation Fellow, a fellow of both the President of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and a national expert for the Clima East Project. She also took part in the Second Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition. In 2022, Nature named her one of the world’s 10 most influential scientists.

Maryna and Svitlana are among 30 newly elected international members. These non-voting members hold citizenship outside the United States. With their election, the Academy’s total number of international members reaches 556.
