Photo: Olha Zakrevska<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your energy is part of the job<\/h2>\n\n<p>Prokofiev opens with an unpopular but straightforward idea: a founder\u2019s mental and emotional state is as much a responsibility as P&L or strategy.<\/p>\n\n<p>Entrepreneurs of his generation, he says, are used to \u00abworking themselves to death\u00bb and, for years, didn\u2019t treat their own resources as requiring systematic attention. The result is predictable \u2014 declining productivity and worse decisions.<\/p>\n\n<p>Every founder, Prokofiev argues, has to honestly track what drains their energy and what restores it, and structure their day so the balance tips toward the latter.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abManaging your energy is part of the job. Pay attention to what fuels you and what saps your energy\u2026 If you\u2019re burned out and have no idea how to fix it, productivity will vanish,\u00bb he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Separately, Prokofiev emphasizes that in his personal setup, the main source of energy is the direction of his efforts.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abFor me, the biggest energy comes from doing things that genuinely interest me. I don\u2019t even try to analyze why I\u2019m doing them. I don\u2019t care whether there will be a result or not. I just do what interests me.\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Interest, in this sense, becomes a very pragmatic asset \u2014 a stable source of fuel without which no founder can sustain a strategy for long.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education and environment<\/h2>\n\n<p>Prokofiev is a strong advocate of \u00abbig-picture\u00bb learning \u2014 programs that shift how you think, not just what skills you have.<\/p>\n\n<p>As an example, he mentions the Wellbeing program on Coursera, a lecture series on the science of happiness and well-being. His cohort included participants from dozens of countries, from Chile to the Philippines. In practice, that meant hearing firsthand from people building companies at radically different scales \u2014 and that kind of environment changes you.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abWhen you sit next to someone who grew a team from a few dozen people to 13,000 in two years and opens one office every day, your perspective shifts. You come back home and can\u2019t look at your own processes the same way.\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>He calls these formats \u00ablong-term investments.\u00bb They don\u2019t deliver immediate, tactical skills, but they reset what you consider realistic goals and which processes you\u2019re even willing to launch.<\/p>\n\n<p>From this perspective, choosing your environment \u2014 education programs, communities, boards, partners \u2014 becomes a separate and deliberate management track for a founder.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make decisions<\/h2>\n\n<p>When it comes to making decisions with partners, like on a board of directors, Prokofiev lays out the classic options \u2014 consensus, majority vote, or unilateral decisions \u2014 and admits that full consensus in a venture setup often produces weak decisions: ones that satisfy everyone but have no energy behind them.<\/p>\n\n<p>Instead, he proposes a pyramid of approaches:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Core business (80\u201390% of results): consensus matters here \u2014 \u00abevery violin is important,\u00bb and the cost of a mistake is high.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New products built on the core: a sufficient majority is enough \u2014 someone will almost always be unhappy because their role is changing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fundamentally new bets and experiments: one committed believer is enough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u00abIf you\u2019re doing something fundamentally new, one person who truly believes in it and is ready to carry it forward is enough. Everyone else may not believe in it. And if you can\u2019t trust the decision of just one person, then you simply don\u2019t have the right people in the room,\u00bb Prokofiev explains.<\/p>\n\n<p>To launch a new startup, he adds, you don\u2019t need unanimous support \u2014 you need one strong owner and a dedicated budget. This approach avoids draining energy through forced consensus where a breakthrough is required, while protecting the core business that keeps the company running today.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leadership as environment design, not coercion<\/h2>\n\n<p>Prokofiev draws a clear line between manufacturing and creative businesses. In the former, rules and regulations work. In the latter, they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abCoercion doesn\u2019t work in creative professions. You can\u2019t force someone to come up with an idea or take responsibility.\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>His leadership model is built around creating the right environment rather than pushing people.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abA leader\u2019s role is to build an environment where people can flourish. You can\u2019t make a rose grow, but you can provide the right soil, water, and protection. Teams are the same \u2014 you manage the conditions, you don\u2019t break people.\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Being humane doesn\u2019t mean dodging hard choices. Prokofiev remembers the company\u2019s first layoffs in 2023: the team saw the P&L, the financial situation was explained, and the cuts were described as necessary \u00abto preserve those who remain.\u00bb For him, it was a mature conversation \u2014 not a way to shield people from reality.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u00abIn our business, we have no assets except our people. So a founder\u2019s key responsibility is simply to choose the right people. After that, they build the strategy themselves \u2014 you don\u2019t need to micromanage them.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Routine that keeps you sharp<\/h2>\n\n<p>When asked about \u00abspecific practices,\u00bb Prokofiev comes back to basics.<\/p>\n\n<p>He\u2019s not a fan of endless personal-productivity hacks, but he sticks to a few simple routines that have worked for him for years:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a consistent sleep schedule \u2014 going to bed and waking up at the same time every day;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthy eating, without extreme restrictions or indulgences;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>morning cardio \u2014 about 45 minutes, which reliably kickstarts his energy for the day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u00abI just do it. It\u2019s easy for me to commit to. All the new trendy productivity stuff?
