RED Driver Training and Relevant Software Introduce a Modern Digital Product for UK Learners
RED Driver Training, the UK’s most well-known driving school brand, has taken a major step in modernising its digital services with the launch of a new learner app, developed in collaboration with Relevant Software. The app replaces a fragmented legacy codebase with a scalable, feature-rich solution that supports both theory test preparation and practical driving progress.

For over three decades, RED has established a reputation for guiding learners to safe driving through in-person training. With the rise of digital-first education, the company set out to expand its offerings and create a unified platform that combines theoretical content, practice tracking, and personalized study plans. To move this vision forward, RED acquired Splink Industries, creators of the popular James May Theory Test app. However, the inherited platform fell short in scalability, user experience, and brand consistency, limiting its potential for nationwide launch.
In partnership with Relevant Software, RED replatformed the app on React Native, integrated proprietary APIs for authentication and progress tracking, and introduced a modern content management system powered by Contentful. The upgraded application now includes interactive quizzes, gamified achievements, and a dual progress tracker that reflects both theory and practical modules. Learners benefit from a video library, personalised study paths that adapt to pace and goals, and an in-app feedback tool that keeps them supported throughout their journey.
The results demonstrate the impact of this transformation. In 2024, RED’s theory products reached more than 323,000 downloads, a threefold increase from the previous year. Revenue nearly doubled, climbing to £362,000, with Android theory apps growing almost fourfold. Most importantly, more than 1,300 learners now pass their DVSA theory tests each month using the structured curriculum and interactive tools within the app.
«This new app reflects RED’s commitment to combining our trusted reputation with the best of digital innovation,» said Adam Watson, CTO at RED Driver Training. «Relevant Software’s expertise helped us transform a legacy product into a platform that delivers real results for learners. Together, we’ve built a solution that is scalable, engaging, and ready to shape the future of driver education in the UK.»
