Ukrainian Creates AI Agent That Adapts CVs to Job Openings

Why do strong candidates fail to make it to the interview stage, and what can be done about it? That’s the question Andrii Lashchuk set out to answer when he built iWantCV, an AI-powered service that helps professionals tailor their CVs to specific job openings in minutes and pass ATS screening used by international companies.

How it works

  • Users upload their CV along with a link to the job opening.
  • The AI analyzes:
    • whether the candidate’s experience matches the role,
    • how well the CV is read by applicant tracking systems (ATS),
    • which sections appear strong,
    • and what experience is missing or unclear.
  • If gaps are identified, the system prompts the user to add relevant experience.
  • The result is an updated CV in PDF format, tailored to the specific job opening. Users also receive ready-made cover letter options and a preparation file for interviews, including guidance on answering the most common recruiter questions.
  • According to Lashchuk, the analysis takes about 60 seconds, significantly speeding up the application process.
  • Importantly, the system does not make up experience. It works exclusively with what is already in the CV, rephrasing and structuring it in a way that ATS software and recruiters can understand.

What problem does iWantCV solve?

  • The idea for the product grew out of Lashchuk’s personal experience.

«I’ve worked in marketing and product teams for more than eight years across FinTech, SaaS, and AI. But even with relevant experience and a strong background, I faced a typical problem: dozens of applications without responses, automatic rejections, and complete opacity in recruitment processes abroad,» he said.

  • Experience can be strong but appear irrelevant when presented incorrectly in a CV: the emphasis may be placed on the wrong tasks, wording, or keywords. As a result, candidates are often filtered out before a human recruiter ever sees their application.
  • This issue is particularly acute for Ukrainian professionals who have relocated or are entering the European and US job markets. Even with relevant experience, they encounter different CV standards, local employer expectations, and automated screening systems that operate according to unfamiliar logic and often provide no feedback.
  • iWantCV addresses this problem by working directly with the context of each job opening. The service compares employer requirements with how candidates describe their experience and generates a version that aligns the two in a language recruitment software «understands.»

«I conducted internal tests by comparing old CVs with versions updated through iWantCV, using different LLMs as independent reviewers,» Lashchuk said. «On average, the updated CVs scored 20–25 points higher in terms of job suitability.»

What stage is the product at?

  • Lashchuk is developing iWantCV independently, without external funding and with minimal startup costs. To build and launch the agent, he relied on accessible no-code and AI tools, API-based models, and his own expertise in product development and marketing.
  • iWantCV is currently available in English. The beta launch took place at the end of October, followed by a public soft launch in mid-November.
  • According to Lashchuk, up to 1,000 users used the product during the beta testing period. These users include professionals in IT, marketing, product, and management who are applying for roles in the UK, EU, and the US. Many of them are Ukrainians who have moved abroad.
  • The business model combines a free tier with credits and paid subscription plans. Under the hood, the service uses both Gemini and OpenAI models for different tasks.
  • Next, Lashchuk plans to launch a B2B offering for universities, educational programs, and NGOs, expand the existing feature set, broaden localization, and scale promotional efforts.
