Capterra Restricts Access for Ukrainian Users Citing Geopolitical Concerns
Capterra, the popular online platform for discovering, comparing, and evaluating business software, has blocked access for users in Ukraine. The restriction was first reported by DOU.
- The platform, owned by Gartner, one of the world’s leading IT consulting firms, is currently inaccessible from Ukrainian IP addresses. The block appears to be enforced at the Cloudflare level.
«I’ve been using this platform for nine years. We have around 200 positive reviews there. It’s a key trust signal for our customers. This situation is really unpleasant,» said the CEO of a Ukrainian IT company.
- After the block took effect, his team reached out to Capterra support. The response they received was unexpected: the restriction is reportedly due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ironically, the platform remains accessible via VPN connections routed through Russia.
Support explained: «We understand your concern, but due to the current geopolitical situation in Ukraine, we have made the difficult decision to refrain from providing Ukrainian companies with access to our platform at this time. This decision is part of our broader policy of responsibly navigating the complexities of the modern international landscape. We want to emphasize that this decision does not reflect our relationship with companies or the quality of your services.»
What is Capterra?
- Capterra enables users to search for software by category (CRM, project management, ERP, HRMS, and more), read verified user reviews from around the world, and compare products based on features and pricing.
- Ukrainian IT companies use Capterra for validating their products and building international credibility. The block could impact their global visibility.
«Capterra results are well indexed on Google, and we’re not sure whether this block affects only user access or also our rankings. It’s possible that we’re no longer showing up in internal search results or that our product pages are now indexed worse,» the CEO told DOU.
- He also warned the move could set a dangerous precedent: if Capterra has blocked Ukraine, others (like G2 or similar platforms) might follow suit.
- As of now, Gartner has not issued an official comment on the situation.
